Allianz Travel Insurance Overview

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Who Is Allianz For

Allianz travel insurance is an ok option for travelers. Their insurance policies ar offer decent medical coverage but nothing very high (their highest is $50K), and their online reviews are not very promising.

On the good side, their policies are generally affordable and the higher tiers offer high amounts for trip cancellation (up to $100k), ideal for high-end adventure vacations.

What's Included

Although Allianz offers different insurance plans, the One Trip Premier is really the only option for adventure travelers as it’s the only one offering a medical coverage of $50,000, which we consider the absolute minimum for adventure trips.

The One Trip Premier plan include:

Emergency Medical Coverage: Coverage Amount $75,000

This benefit covers losses arising from covered medical and dental emergencies that occur during your trip. For dental expenses, there is a maximum coverage limit of $750 for all eligible dental treatments.

Emergency Medical Transportation Coverage: Coverage Amount $1,000,000

This benefit covers medically necessary transportation to the nearest hospital or appropriate facility following a covered.

Trip Cancellation Coverage: Coverage Amount Up to $200,000

This benefit reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason. Unique to the OneTrip Premier Plan, a NOAA hurricane warning is included as a covered reason for trip cancellation. For detailed information, please refer to your plan documents.

Trip Interruption Coverage: Coverage Amount Up to $300,000

This benefit reimburses you for the unused, non-refundable portion of your trip and covers the increased transportation costs required to return home due to a covered reason.

Baggage Loss/Damage Coverage: Coverage Amount $2,000

This benefit covers the loss, damage, or theft of your baggage and personal effects.

You can see the full coverage of the Allianz travel insurance plans here. Note that the above is subject to the limits of the specific plan and some benefits are not available for purchase in all states.

What's Not Included

Most Allianz insurance policies offer optional add-ons. In the following section, we will get into the details. For now, these are the primary exclusions that Allianz Insurance policies may include:

High-Risk Activities: Coverage does not extend to skydiving, bungee jumping, heli-skiing, and other high-risk sporting activities deemed unsafe by the insurer.

Intentional Acts: Losses resulting from intoxication, drug use, self-harm, or criminal activity are not covered.

Specifically Designated Events: Certain epidemics (Covid is covered), natural disasters, and acts of war are explicitly listed as exclusions in the policy.

Insurance Plans

Allianz offers three comprehensive travel insurance plans: OneTrip Basic, OneTrip Prime, and OneTrip Premier.

OneTrip Basic is the most budget-friendly option, providing trip cancellation, interruption, and delay benefits, along with emergency medical coverage and protection against baggage loss.

OneTrip Prime includes all the benefits of the Basic plan but with higher coverage limits and additional coverage areas. It also offers complimentary coverage for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

OneTrip Premier is the most extensive plan, doubling nearly all post-departure limits of the Prime plan and offering more covered reasons for trip cancellation.

Adventure & Extreme Sports Protection

Allianz is as ambiguous as you can be when it comes to what adventure activities are covered with their plans.

They state that “participating in extreme, high-risk sports and activities will NOT be covered”. This in my opinion is a reason to forget about Allianz and go with another company.

Is hiking a risk activity? What about freediving or downhill mountain biking? Risk is something relative and if the company doesn’t explicity says it’s covered, I would recommend you to assume it’s not.

If you purchase their Sports add-on, here are the activities that are explicity covered:

  • Any high-altitude activity, BASE jumping, or free climbing;
  • Rafting/kayaking above Class V rapids or canoeing above Class III rapids;
  • Heli-skiing or skiing or snowboarding in an area designated unsafe by the resort
  • management;
  • Personal combat or fighting sports, Running of the Bulls, or rodeo activities;
  • Racing any motorized vehicle or watercraft other than go-karts; or
  • Free diving at a depth greater than 30 feet (10 meters) or scuba diving at a depth greater
  • than 100 feet (30 meters) or, for uncertified divers, diving without a certified dive master

Pricing

Prices depend on the duration and cost of your trip, the destination you travel to, your state of residence, your age, and the additional extras you choose to include.

Just to give you an idea, a policy for a $2,000 week-long trip to Peru for a 40-year-old male from Florida will cost approximately $115 for the One Trip Premier Plan.

For accurate pricing, please get a quote for your trip on the Allianz website directly.

What's Covered & Who's Eligible

The main limitation of Allianz is that their insurance policies are only offered to US citizens and residents. Let’s look at the specifics.

Nationalities: Only US citizens and residents are eligible through www.allianztravelinsurance.com. Some countries have their own Allianz insurance website, like the UK, Spain or Germany.

Pre-existing conditions: Pre-existing conditions can be covered with the higher tier plans.

Seniors Over 65: It seems to be 80, but Allianz is not very transparent about this.

Groups: Insurance policies for solo travelers, couples and families are available.

User Reviews and Testimonials

Insurance companies often receive negative online reviews due to issues such as complicated policy language, claim denials, slow processing times, and perceived unfair practices.

Allianz in particular receives some of the worst online reviews of any travel insurance company out there.

Allianz vs Competitors

Overall, Allianz insurance policies tend to be more affordable than those of its competitors, but their coverage is not very clear with a lot of exceptions and limitations on them, that makes it hard to know what you’re actually buying.

Conclusion

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Allianz is ht epitome of an old insurance company that is not transparent with their plans, their website is old and their customer service non-existent.

With so many other options on the market, there’s no reason to purchase travel insurance from them. It’s impossible to find out what’s the age limit on their plans, what adventure activities are covered or how to compare their different plans.

On top of that, their online reviews are the absolute worst of any other travel insurance company we’ve looked at. So if for any reason I couldn’t understand you decide to go with Allianz, please proceed with caution and make sure you carefully read the fine print of your policy.

Antonio was born and raised in Southern Spain, and quit his job in 2013 to travel the world full-time with his wife Amanda for 10 years straight. Their passion for adventure took them to visit 150+ countries.

They cycled 25,000km + from California to Patagonia, sailed over 10,000NM around the Caribbean & Sea of Cortez, rode their motorbikes 30,000 kms+ across West Africa (Spain to South Africa) and visited Antarctica, among many other adventure expeditions. Today, they’re still traveling,  currently around the USA with an RV.

Traveling to so many places, remote destinations and by different means taught them a lot about travel insurance, which policies to hold depending on the area and the type of adventure they were doing. Antonio now publishes regular content to help other travelers choose the best travel insurance for adventure trips.

Together, they also run the travel community Summit, the RV site Hitched Up, the boutique accommodation blog Unique Places and the popular newsletter Adventure Fix, where they share their knowledge about the places they’ve visited and the ones still remaining on their list.
